CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER(cm) and [CFP trademark]

are certification marks owned outside the U.S. by Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd. Institute of Financial Planning is the marks licensing authority for the CFP marks in the United Kingdom, through agreement with FPSB.

Transferring your CFP licence to the UK

As an existing holder of a CFP certificate you are eligible to transfer this qualification to the UK if you are planning to migrate. In order to transfer your existing licence we will need the following:

  • A copy of your current CFP certificate
  • A note of your membership number together with the address of your CFP issuer
  • Confirmation of the date you intend to move to the UK

We will then contact the relevant CFP board and ask for confirmation that you are a fully paid-up member. Upon receipt of this information you will be sent a set of membership and CFP registration forms. It is a requirement of the Institute of Financial Planning that in order to use the CFP licence you must also be a member of the Institute and agree to abide by the code of ethics. You will therefore be required to pay an annual membership fee of £140.00 plus an annual CFP licence fee of £125.00. The CFP licence fee will be pro-rota for the first year, and then renewable annually on 1st April thereafter.

In order to be able to practice in the UK market and offer Financial Planning Services, you must hold certain minimum UK qualifications, such as the Certificate in Financial Planning (Cert FP) which is administered by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII). You will not be able to use the CFP licence in the UK until you have successfully completed the Certificate in Financial Planning (Cert FP).

This qualification consists of 5 separate papers, details of which can be obtained from the CII website, www.cii.co.uk or you can speak to one of their advisers on: (+44) 0208 989 8464.

When you have completed the Certificate in Financial Planning we will need to see a copy of your certificate. It is only at this stage that you will be eligible to use the CFP licence in the UK.

Transferring your CFP licence overseas

The Institute of Financial Planning is a member Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB). It has exclusive rights to their licensed trade marks in the UK.

Established in 1990, FPSB has twenty international member organisations that seek to advance the profession of personal Financial Planning and work to promote the CFP certification marks as the globally recognised standard of excellence for Financial Planners.

Depending on where you are moving, you may be able to transfer your UK CFP certificate to that country. Each FPSB member has endorsed the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER Certification process as the best means of testing for, and demonstrating, Financial Planner competency and ethical behaviour.
