CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER(cm) and [CFP trademark]

are certification marks owned outside the U.S. by Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd. Institute of Financial Planning is the marks licensing authority for the CFP marks in the United Kingdom, through agreement with FPSB.

Membership levels

Can anyone join the Institute?

The Institute is multi-disciplinary in its membership. It draws its members from the related disciplines of accountancy, insurance, taxation, stockbroking, education and legal professions, amongst others.

Membership is available to anyone interested in their own professional development or the development of Financial Planning as a profession. A special scheme operates for younger members (under 25).

All we require from our members is that they will:

  • Aspire to higher standards in education and ethics
  • Achieve higher standards - ultimately by taking examinations leading to
    the Certified Financial Planner licence
  • Adhere to those higher standards by embracing the Code of Ethics

What are the categories of membership?

Ordinary member

  • General interest in financial services sector
  • No formal qualifications required

Designatory letters: None.

Member

Have achieved one of the following:

  • Chartered Insurance Institute's Financial Planning Certificate or
  • Certificate of Financial Planning
  • An alternate approved exam eg: CeFA, IAC
  • Authorised under the Financial Services Act 1986 to conduct investment business

Designatory letters: MIFP.

Associate member

  • Holds a combination of various professional qualifications (including the Chartered Insurance Institute's Advanced Financial Planning Certificate (AFPC)).
  • Diploma in Financial Planning
  • Must demonstrate three years relevant experience

Designatory letters: AIFP.

Fellow

  • Will have passed the Institute's fellowship examinations
  • Must demonstrate five years' relevant experience in Financial Planning

Designatory Letters: FIFP.

Where required you will be asked to submit copies of your exam certificates to verify your membership level.

How much will it cost?

Members are required to pay a one-off joining fee initially and then an annual subscription.

  • Joining fee: £25.00

Annual membership rates:

  • Membership all types: £150.00
  • Membership all types (under 25 years of age): £25.00
