are certification marks owned outside the U.S. by Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd. Institute of Financial Planning is the marks licensing authority for the CFP marks in the United Kingdom, through agreement with FPSB.

To build and maintain the profession of Financial Planning for the benefit of consumers in the UK.

What is the Institute of Financial Planning?

The Institute of Financial Planning is the UK professional body of those committed to the development of the multi-disciplinary profession of Financial Planning and represents and assists Financial Planning practitioners in the UK

The IFP does not offer advice or planning services directly to consumers. It can however, offer you guidance on planner services, and can help you to find a suitably qualified CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER professional to help you achieve your financial objectives.

The IFP serves a large membership of diverse Financial Planning professionals through a programme of national events and training courses, and a regional ‘Branch Network’ centred around 20 areas across the UK.  IFP membership is drawn from across the financial services community.

Our vision is to achieve the broadest possible recognition for the Financial Planning profession.The Institute of Financial Planning Ltd is a non-profitable company limited by guarantee and has no shareholders

 Why was the Institute formed?

The Institute was formed in 1986 for the following key reasons: 

  • To promote the profession and practice of Financial Planning.
  • To encourage education in the theory and practice of Financial Planning.
  • To increase public awareness of the need for Financial Planning.
  • To establish a Registry of CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER practitioners.
  • To create a recognised professional qualification for Institute members.
  • To ensure professional standards through Practice Standards for CFP ® practitioners.
  • To ensure ethical standards through its Code of Ethics and Code of Practice.
  • To encourage the sharing of professional knowledge and skills within the members network to benefit the client.

In the UK, the IFP is the exclusive licensing authority for the CFPCM, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERCM and the (CFP trademark) which is an internationally recognised certification awarded to individuals who fulfill the stringent requirements and have been appropriately tested. The CFP marks represent a globally recognised standard of competence and professionalism. The IFP certifies, upholds and monitors the professional standards of Financial Planning practitioners to protect the interests of members of the public, thus ensuring that they receive proper Financial Planning advice from its’ members.
