It’s been widely acknowledged that the Paraplanner represents one of the key roles within the Financial Planning business. Properly defined and supported, the role can provide the foundation to build a profitable and progressive business.
We recognise the need to provide the training and qualification structure to help Paraplanners be able to flourish within the profession.
The Paraplanner role may be broken down into four key parts:
- Preparing and maintaining the client file
- Preparing recommendations
- Implementing recommendations
- Review
As a Paraplanner you will need to receive the training required to do the job. You will also need to have the appropriate qualifications to be recognised by your clients and peers for the job that you do.
Having defined the role the competencies have also been set out showing the knowledge skills and professional standards that are needed to properly fulfil the role.

Paraplanner workshop
Exclusive to the IFP, we offer a two day workshop that’s based around the job competencies of a Paraplanner. Refreshingly, it moves away from the more traditional technical content, providing delegates with a comprehensive understanding of the Financial Planning process and more particularly, skills required to successfully fulfil the role of a Paraplanner within a Financial Planning business and embark on the Certificate in Paraplanning.
This unique workshop is highly interactive with delegates being encouraged to take the opportunity to learn from each other during the various group based activities. A suitable period has been allowed between each workshop to ensure delegates can put into practice their new found skills under supervision.
The Certificate in Paraplanning examination
This online exam is ideal for Paraplanners who wish to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and competence by obtaining a recognised Paraplanning qualification. The qualification is also an ideal step towards obtaining CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERCM certification – the global standard of excellence in Financial Planning – for those who wish to follow this path.
The IFP offers a range of options for candidates to maximise flexibility and to ensure that each candidate can access the combination which is most appropriate to their own individual needs.
CFPCM, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERCM and CFP logo are certification marks owned outside the U.S. by Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd. Institute of Financial Planning is the marks licensing authority for the CFP marks in the United Kingdom, through agreement with FPSB.
